On this night, we gather around a table laden with twelve meatless dishes, each representing one of the apostles. I’ll never forget the excitement as a kid, waiting for my grandparents to set up the table with that deliciously fragrant barszcz (beet soup) with uszka (little dumplings) floating in it. It just smells like Christmas! And of course, the carp; oh man, that’s an experience. Some families keep it alive in a bathtub until the feast, which was always a big topic for jokes among us grandkids.

As we break the opłatek (Christmas wafer) with our loved ones, we share wishes of health and happiness, and it’s such a touching moment. After the meal, we often sing carols and enjoy traditional desserts like makowiec (poppy seed cake) and pierniczki (gingerbread). Just thinking about it makes me nostalgic! Then, there’s New Year’s Eve — Sylwester — where parties get wild! Here the focus shifts, and we dive into more savory delights, sometimes featuring a whole roast pig or dishes filled with herring. It’s all about celebrating new beginnings!

Wiosenne Imprezy: Easter Delights

Ah, Easter! It’s pretty much the most cheerful time of the year for us. After the long winter, we really embrace the arrival of spring. Our Easter breakfast is something else. It starts with Święconka, where we take beautifully decorated baskets filled with Easter goodies to church for a blessing. Inside you’ll find a beautifully glazed ham, hard-boiled eggs, all sorts of sausage, and of course, my personal favorite — ćwikła, a beetroot and horseradish mixture. I fancy it like a spicy little surprise!

On Easter Sunday, the breakfast table is decked to the nines! There’s the classic żurek — a sour rye soup that’s just perfect for those hanging-over from too much partying the night before. The best part? We dig into everything, laughing and chatting, creating an atmosphere of warmth and happiness. Oh, and don’t forget the sweet babka — it’s like a fluffy hug for your taste buds!

Celebrating Harvest: Autumn Feasts

With the arrival of autumn, we shift gears into a different realm of flavors. The harvest season brings us together for Dożynki, or Harvest Festival. Growing up, I remember helping my parents collect grains and delicious fruits from the fields, and this effort culminates in big communal meals. Here, we savor everything hearty — from bigos (hunter’s stew) packed with sauerkraut, meats, and spices to placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes) served with sour cream. These dishes are about comfort and celebration, reaping what the year has blessed us with.

There’s something soulful about preparing and feasting on these dishes. We gather the extended family, and as we sit down to share stories and laughter, it’s like the food becomes a great conversation starter. It’s proof that food truly brings us together, no matter what time of year it is!

Those lazy afternoons, with grilled goodies sizzling away, are simply unforgettable!
